Middle School  - Multi-Cultural School Newspaper Project

Description: A bi-weekly newspaper publication created with and for Portland area
Middle School students.

Goals: 1) to inform -  to provide encouraging, uplifting, local, national and international
news to our young people

2)to connect - to create a feeling of connectedness among the diverse populations of
Middleschoolers throughout the city and within schools

3)to help -  to address social and emotional issues the Middleschoolers may be
dealing with in school or at home

   4) assist with literacy by creating excitement around a publication that belongs to
them

   5) improve writing skills and improve communication culture

Structure:

at the center: 1 -News Insider- this is a  volunteer inside one of our Major Local
Papers who will collect  6 stories for each issue and provide them to
                               the editor

1 -Editor - outside the Education system - perhaps from local University

3 - Assistant Editors - who will be Undergraduate Students of Education
                                           -volunteer (future work study?)
and will serve to convert the associated press
Science, International, and National stories into something
written at grade level for the students

each Assistant Editor will be the interface with
3 or 4 middle school level student editors
   at the individual Middle Schools:

2 -individual Middle School Editors for each school involved
-each Middle School who decides to participate
will find two student who will work as a team to plan,
gather and edit the articles provided by the student writers

2 -writers -who will gather cultural stories and news stories from their student body
and school

2 photographers -preferably students who are heading towards artistic careers

may need to find a donor for equipment for this student

(note - students will probably be chosen based upon recommendations from their
teachers-
this is a minimum number of writers and photographers - if there is more interest
more will be accommodated)

from the community - parent volunteers to bring new schools into the program

publishing timetable -     stories will be provided from each participating school and the
editor will choose which stories to include in the next issue based upon which ones
have the most value to the student body they are serving
(any story that doesn't get into this issue and isn't time sensitive can be considered for
the next one)
student stories will be mixed with the national, international, and science stories
developed by
                   the Associate Editors

project timeline -  September or January would be good choices for start up
