FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
East Portland Non-Profit:
American Childhood Enhancement Society
offers “Story Dance” at
Laurelhurst Dance Studio in April 2009!

ACE society presents a new kind of dance” class” meant to serve the young dancer’s desire to
dance from their heart,
rather than train for a future ballet or modern dance career.
The program is co-sponsored by  Portland Parks and Recreation.

“People should be dancing for themselves -
and it is extraordinary to be able to create all this beauty from inside ourselves
and express all these emotions-with our bodies!”
“This is the revolution in thinking we are trying to spark  in young people
Dance for yourself !  this is what Story Dance is for!”
says originator Ms. Ruth Flores.

Story Dance  will use a short piece of classical music which will lend itself to the making up of
a story. The dancers will dance the story they make up, and refine the dance together.

One of the many goals is to give young dancers (6-14) an opportunity to use their ballet or
modern dance steps to do their own dance together with other young dancers.

This springl it will be taught by the program originator, local resident Ms Ruth Flores, who had
her traditional ballet training at Carnegie Hall, and by Amirah Said, Ashland native  /newly
transplanted to SE Portland, the first instructor to be trained in Story Dance instruction; an
energetic talent who shares the originators' passion and love for dance
as a gift to children..

“ I cannot stress enough how valuable this can be for young people; to have dance as a true
emotional and creative outlet “ -  Ruth Flores / program originator.
“The movement we encourage most in our society is sports oriented; and this is not for
everyone. Traditional ballet classes are valuable, but usually have little or no opportunity for
individual creativity or self expression after children pass the age of   8.”
“Once a child decides;”ah I guess I’m not going to be a ballet dancer when I grow up”; then
they think “oh well what am I taking classes for?””
“You are taking classes for you! Because our bodies have these amazing abilities -like our
faces and our eyes; to express emotions with tremendous subtly  -and it is a gift to all of us
that we should take advantage of and develop to enrich our own lives.
Story Dance will give you the opportunity to see what you can create on your own -and with
others-
this is what it’s for!”

The classes will start on April 1st;  and will meet on Wednesdays,.
